What Is PDRN in Skincare? The Salmon DNA Behind the Hype
What is PDRN skincare? You're probably asking because the label's suddenly on half the serums at Olive Young, like you're supposed to already know what it stands for. PDRN is a chain of DNA fragments, most commonly purified from salmon or trout sperm, and it's become one of the fastest-moving trend ingredients in Korean skincare over the past year.
That's not a euphemism. It really is fish DNA. How does that even work on human skin?

It's Literally Made From Salmon Sperm. Here's Why That Works
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It's not one molecule but a mixture of DNA fragments. Salmon and trout DNA gets used because it's close enough in structure to human DNA that skin cells can recognize and use the fragments as raw material, without the immune reaction that foreign genetic material would otherwise trigger. A 2017 pharmacology review puts the typical range at 80 to 200 kilodaltons, clustered around 132 kDa.

The same review names PDRN's main mechanism plainly: "the engagement of adenosine A2A receptors," which it says "play a central role in modulating inflammation, oxygen consumption, ischemia, cell growth, and angiogenesis." Block that receptor with an antagonist drug, and PDRN's effects disappear, a result pharmacologists treat as strong mechanistic evidence.
That evidence, though, comes almost entirely from medical use. The same review documents PDRN roughly doubling the healing rate of diabetic foot ulcers compared to placebo, speeding closure on thermal burns, and reaching complete healing in 67% of venous ulcer patients. That's injected or clinically applied PDRN treating actual wounds. A $25 bottle in your bathroom is a different application entirely.
The Real Evidence Is Injectable, Not a Serum
The shelf label skips this part entirely. Dermatologists interviewed by NBC News draw a hard line between the two delivery methods.


That's Dr. Mona Gohara, a board-certified dermatologist, describing what a topical PDRN serum can realistically do next to an in-office treatment. She's blunt about the gap elsewhere in the same piece: "There's real science showing PDRN can stimulate wound healing and collagen production, but most of that data comes from medical use, like burns and ulcers, not beauty facials. So it's promising, but the fountain-of-youth claims are a stretch."
PDRN's molecular weight and negative charge make it a poor fit for crossing intact skin on its own. That's why injectable treatments like Rejuran exist in the first place, using a needle to solve the delivery problem a serum can't. Dr. Nicole Y. Lee, another dermatologist quoted in the same article, puts the mechanism problem in plainer terms: "While topical use may offer some surface hydration or antioxidant support, the regenerative effects are typically achieved through in-office procedures that place PDRN directly into the skin."
One Real Study Now Backs Topical Use (Read the Fine Print First)
For years, the honest answer was "there's no topical evidence". That changed slightly in December 2025, when researchers published a study on a plant-derived version of PDRN, made from Paeonia lactiflora (peony) rather than salmon, in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
Ten participants used a low-molecular-weight peony PDRN topically for four weeks. At the two-week mark, the change wasn't significant yet; it took the full four weeks to show up. Periorbital skin elasticity, measured as an R2 value, went from 69.22 at baseline to 72.16, a 4.25% improvement, statistically significant at p<0.001.
Before getting excited about that result, all six authors on the paper work for NewLife BST Co., Ltd., the company that presumably sells the ingredient they tested. The paper states it "received no external funding," and that means the company funded its own research on its own product, a distinction that matters but isn't automatically a disqualifier. Ten people is also a small sample for a cosmetic claim. It's the first published topical clinical evidence PDRN has, real, peer-reviewed, and statistically significant. It's also company-authored and unreplicated.
Both things are true at once.
What's in the Bottle You're Buying
Here's where it gets frustrating for anyone trying to shop by the numbers. I checked Medicube's own US product page on September 8, 2026. The Ultra Light PDRN Pink Peptide Serum runs $21 on sale (regular $26) for 30 mL, and lists "Sodium DNA" in its ingredients. Nowhere on that page does Medicube state a PDRN percentage or ppm figure.
Third-party retail blogs will hand you a specific number anyway. One aggregator I checked claimed "10,000 ppm (1%) – independently verified" for this exact product. I couldn't find that verification anywhere on Medicube's own materials. That's the same undisclosed-concentration problem this network flagged when we pulled the INCI list on Medicube's separate PDRN cream line, where the actual PDRN ingredient landed at position 23, well below the peptides and niacinamide the marketing leads with. A brand naming a product after its buzziest ingredient doesn't mean that ingredient is the main one in the formula.
Is it revolutionary? Not at 30 mL for $21 rubbed onto intact skin. Is it worth trying? Maybe, mostly for the peptides and niacinamide most PDRN serums bundle in alongside it, with the fish DNA riding along for the marketing story more than carrying the result on its own.
If you're chasing the bounce an in-office Rejuran-style treatment gives, remember that's a needle rather than a dropper bottle, and the price difference reflects that gap honestly. If you just want a decent hydrating serum and the trend ingredient is a bonus, that's fine. Just don't pay a premium specifically for the DNA claim on the label.
